Discount Visit FAQ

What is your usual price?

$1000/day for 4 programs or 2 workshops, $600/half-day 2 programs/1 workshop, $400/one program.

If our school/district schedules multiple days, can we get a discount?

Yes, the second and subsequent full days are $100 off.

What is the discount for a referral?

Get another host to confirm a full day visit, and earn a $100 discount off your first full day. Limit one discount/visit.

Can we get a discount for doing a book sale?

No. But you can earn some money to help cover fees by preordering and offering autographed books to attendees of the event. Author will offer ten percent of all preorder sales to the hosting library/school/event. See Visit Books for details.

What is the summer discount?

Visits between June 1 and September 1 are $100 off. Additional discounts may apply for nonprofits, museums, and church events.

Do you ever waive travel expenses?

Yes, if I am traveling to an area for other reasons.

How can we estimate travel expenses?

There is no charge for the first 10 miles of travel from my home in Clear Lake (use Clear Lake Intermediate School as your map locator) to the host location. After that, the charge is $1.00 per mile of distance (i.e. I charge 50 cents/mile and assume a roundtrip). I generally will not drive farther than Austin, so check airfares and assume at least one hotel night to estimate expenses. Transport to/from the airport and hotel is assumed provided by the host. If not, there will be a taxi charge based on local rates and hotel location. I do not charge for meals.

Do you do charity visits?

I will occasionally speak in exchange for expenses if the visit benefits one of my member organizations (such as the National Space Society or SCBWI).

What do you charge to judge a contest?

If I am hired for an author visit, there is no charge to judge a contest. Otherwise, my usual manuscript consulting rates apply, and the fee depends on the number and length of the entries. Contact me for an estimate to critique poetry, short stories, and nonfiction. I do not critique adult novels.
